Students who spent more than two hours daily on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok consistently showed lower academic performance—averaging a GPA of 2.4 compared to 3.1 for lighter users. Notably, using educational forums and professional networks, like LinkedIn, was linked to improved results.

These findings highlight the complex link between social media use and academic achievement. The study had some limitations, such as its small sample size and reliance on self-reporting, potentially impacting reliability. Educational institutions should promote productive digital habits instead of merely discouraging usage. Raising awareness, recommending digital boundaries, and supporting learning-focused tools may help students balance technology and performance. Ultimately, social media is not inherently harmful, but misuse can significantly hinder a student’s ability to focus and succeed.
